“You really need to sleep, Shane.”

Holden waddled out onto the porch, a glass of water in her hand.

It was late again, and I was thinking. Outside. In the darkness. In the quiet that fell after midnight most nights.

Tonight, though, I was alone. None of my enforcers had joined me. Well, Mark was in the infirmary and Splinter had moved south. Shaz was probably still in his workroom, tinkering with the Lamni Detection Device.

Erin? Well, I suspected she was out there, somewhere, just out of sight, blending in with the shadows. That was what made her an excellent sniper, the fact even when she stood close to her target, she was hard to find.

It was also what would make her a good second in command. She wouldn’t disturb me unless another enforcer came by or it was vitally important.

Holden didn’t even try to sit in my lap this time. Instead, she flopped into a bowl chair which we had lined with a large, fluffy pillow. She was facing out into the compound, looking in the same direction I was.

A sigh escaped her. “Funny how far things have come since I first arrived here.”

Indeed. I remembered when Max and I had convinced her to come see the pups, my nieces and nephew, after we had retrieved them from that lab. They had been non-communicative, unwilling to eat in their grief. Both their bodies and souls had been withering away.

After seeing their parents murdered in front of them, Edward Black had ripped them from their home and placed them in a filthy cage to be experimented on. I had saved them from that lab, but Holden had brought them from death’s door.

Had that only been a little less than a year ago?

She shot me a side glance. “So much can happen in so little time, eh?”

I smiled, watching as the skin on her belly rolled and pushed out. It surprised me she had made this far into her third trimester. Heck, it had surprised Max she had as well. Carrying three pups was difficult for any woman.

Anger blossomed in my chest.

She shouldn’t be traveling. She shouldn’t have to go to this gala. It would be our luck she would have the pups there! These god-damn Lamni needed to go back to their own planet and leave us alone!

“What are you thinking about now, Shane?” Her voice was soft.

I sighed, the anger slowly seeping away. “Sorry, love. I should have closed down our bond.”

A quick glance at me out of the corner of her eye made me realize she wasn’t letting me off that easily.

“You don’t think I could read that ugly face you just had a moment ago? What made you so angry?”

Some of the anger returned, coloring my voice. “Your boss. This gala. These Lamni!” My voice rose slightly, but even I could hear how loud I was. I bit my lip and started again, my voice softer. “You could go into labor any day now. You should stay here, have our pups, and say hell to the gala.
